Viimistluspuit

Viimistluspuit is the finishing plaster used as the final coat on interior walls and ceilings. It creates a smooth, paint-ready surface and helps even out minor imperfections in the substrate. The coat is typically thin, often about 1–3 millimeters, chosen to balance surface quality with the substrate’s condition.

Common formulations include gypsum-based viimistluspuit, cement-lime viimistluspuit, and traditional lime-based finishing plasters. Gypsum plasters offer very smooth surfaces and fast setting, but are less suitable for high moisture areas. Cement-lime and lime-based finishes provide greater breathability and moisture tolerance, making them appropriate for historic buildings or damp environments. The choice depends on substrate, climate, and desired aesthetic.

Viimistluspuit can be applied over stable masonry, concrete, base plaster, fiberboard, or gypsum boards that have been properly prepared. The substrate should be clean and firmly bonded, with dust removed and, if needed, pre-damped before application. The work is typically done with a trowel, applying from bottom to top and then finishing with a steel trowel to achieve a uniform, flat surface. Curing conditions should be controlled to minimize cracks.

Advantages include a uniform finish, improved paint adhesion, and the ability to skim out minor defects. Limitations involve sensitivity to excessive moisture for some formulations, potential cracking if the substrate moves, and the need for proper curing. Repairs are usually performed by applying a new skim coat over the damaged area. Proper dust protection and ventilation are advised when handling dry materials.
