Viidavadians

Viidavadians are an ethnolinguistic community native to the Viidavadian Basin, a fertile highland region in the northern part of the fictional nation of Valara. They have historically lived in closely knit valley settlements linked by mountain passes.

The Viidavadian language, with several dialects, belongs to a small regional language cluster and is often learned alongside the national language. It features agglutinative morphology and a rich inventory of agricultural terms.

Traditional livelihoods center on agriculture, dairy farming, and craftwork such as weaving and pottery. In modern times many Viidavadians participate in broader sectors, while maintaining distinctive customs.

Archaeological and historical records place long-standing settlement in the valley from at least the 12th century, with a period of greater political organization during the Late Middle Ages. In the 20th century, the Viidavadians experienced integration into the national state and a gradual shift toward urban life, while reviving regional festivals.

Society emphasizes family and communal decision making; elder councils in villages; local leadership shared with national institutions.

Key cultural events include the Harvest Festival, celebrating agricultural cycles; music featuring plucked strings and flutes, and distinctive geometric textile patterns.

Estimates place the Viidavadians at tens of thousands, with major concentrations in valley towns and diaspora communities in border towns.
