Videodesigners

Videodesigners are professionals who plan and execute the visual components of live performances, film shoots, broadcasts, and immersive installations. They design moving images, projections, LED wall content, and video elements that accompany and enhance a production. The role combines graphic design, motion graphics, video editing, and technical theatre to create visuals that respond to music, dialogue, lighting, and stage action.

Responsibilities include concept development with the creative team, storyboarding and pre-visualization, creating or sourcing assets, animation, live camera feeds, and the integration of video with lighting, sound, and set design. Videodesigners may also handle playback and real-time manipulation during performances, as well as content management, archiving, and version control for multiple venues.

Common contexts are theatre, opera, dance, concerts, corporate events, art installations, and immersive venues. They often work in collaboration with directors, lighting designers, stage designers, choreographers, and sound designers to ensure timing, cueing, and spatial alignment of visuals with other production elements.

Technical scope includes selecting and configuring video playback and control systems, creating technical plots, and programming shows in software and on media servers. Popular tools include Resolume, Watchout, QLab, MadMapper, and TouchDesigner, as well as projection mapping techniques for irregular surfaces and LED walls. Knowledge of color management, calibration, rigging, and cabling is important.

Education and career paths vary; many videodesigners come from graphic design, animation, video production, or theatre technology backgrounds. The role is often freelance or employed by theatres, events agencies, broadcast studios, or entertainment companies.
