Vertssystem

Vertssystem is a term used in architecture, urban design, and horticulture to describe a holistic approach to integrating vegetation into built environments along vertical surfaces and structures. The concept treats the vertical dimension as a functional element for climate control, biodiversity, and aesthetics, rather than as a passive backdrop.

It is distinct from vertical farming in its emphasis on green infrastructure within exterior façades and interior wall systems, and from simple hanging planters by emphasizing integrated substrates, irrigation, structural support, and building performance.

Applications include green façades, living walls, balcony planters, and vertically layered roof gardens, as well as multifunctional systems for new builds and retrofit projects. Typical components are a structural anchor or frame, a growing substrate or substrate-less media, irrigation and drainage, plant species selection, and access for maintenance.

Many vertsystem designs incorporate sensors and building management integration to monitor moisture, temperature, and health of the vegetation. Benefits often cited include improved microclimate, enhanced air quality, stormwater management, reduced energy demand through shading and insulation, and increased urban biodiversity. Challenges include structural load, ongoing maintenance, initial cost, plant selection for local conditions, and potential irrigation issues.
