Verstärkungsfasern, often translated as reinforcing fibers, are materials added to another substance, typically a matrix, to enhance its mechanical properties. These fibers are usually much stronger and stiffer than the matrix material itself. Common types of reinforcing fibers include glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramid fibers, and natural fibers like cellulose. The principle behind their use is to distribute applied stress across the larger, stronger fibers, thereby increasing the overall strength, stiffness, and durability of the composite material.

The effectiveness of reinforcing fibers depends on several factors, including their type, length, orientation, and how well they bond with the matrix. For instance, continuous fibers aligned in the direction of expected stress generally provide the greatest strengthening effect.
