Vernickelung

Vernickelung is a metallurgical surface-treatment in which a layer of nickel is deposited on a substrate to improve appearance, corrosion resistance, and wear properties. It is widely used on steel, copper, aluminum, and, after pretreatment, plastic parts.

Coatings are applied mainly by electroplating or by electroless nickel deposition. Electroplating uses aqueous nickel salts in a bath (for example nickel sulfate with nickel chloride and boric acid) and an electric current to reduce nickel onto the surface; common variants include bright or matte finishes and Watts or sulfamate baths. Electroless nickel plating deposits nickel alloys, typically Ni-P or Ni-B, from a solution without external current.

Substrates are prepared by degreasing, descaling, pickling, and surface activation to ensure adhesion. Typical coating thickness ranges from a few micrometers for decorative finishes to several tens of micrometers for functional protection; depending on the part, thickness may be specified and controlled by plating time.

Vernickelung offers good uniform coverage, corrosion resistance in many environments, and increased hardness. It is commonly used for fasteners, hardware, automotive components, electrical connectors, and decorative finishes. Disadvantages include the need for chemical management and waste treatment, the potential for hydrogen embrittlement of high-strength steels, and nickel sensitivity in some people. Some baths historically used cyanide; modern processes increasingly rely on cyanide-free formulations.

Quality control typically uses X-ray fluorescence to verify thickness, adhesion tests, and hardness measurements. Proper process control and regulatory compliance are essential in industrial settings.
