They may advocate for better infrastructure and transport planning through dialogue with municipalities, police, and other public bodies, and they often cooperate with schools, insurers, and user groups.

History and scope: The concept emerged in the 19th century in movements promoting travel infrastructure, routes, and safety for travelers. With the spread of motorization in the 20th century, many Verkehrsvereine expanded to include motorist safety, accident prevention, and broader policy issues. Today, they function as citizen platforms for road safety education, sustainable mobility, and local mobility projects.
