Verenpainetaudit, often referred to as hypertension or high blood pressure, is a common medical condition characterized by consistently elevated pressure within the arteries. This means the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is too high over time. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure (the top number), which measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats, and diastolic pressure (the bottom number), which measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats.

Normal blood pressure is generally considered to be around 120/80 mmHg. When these readings are persistently higher, typically above 130/80 mmHg for systolic or 80 mmHg for diastolic, it is diagnosed as hypertension. There are two main types: primary hypertension, which develops gradually with no identifiable cause, and secondary hypertension, which is caused by an underlying medical condition such as kidney problems, thyroid issues, or certain medications.

Untreated verenpainetaudit significantly increases the risk of serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, and vision loss. Lifestyle factors such as a diet high in sodium, lack of physical activity, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking are major contributors. Stress can also play a role. Diagnosis is made through regular blood pressure monitoring. Treatment often involves lifestyle modifications and, if necessary, prescription medications to lower blood pressure.
