Venymäliuskoihin, often translated as strain gauges, are sensors used to measure strain or deformation in an object. They work by converting mechanical strain into a change in electrical resistance. A typical strain gauge consists of a flexible backing material with a thin, metallic foil pattern etched onto it. This pattern, often a grid or meander, is designed to stretch or compress along with the surface it's attached to.

When the object deforms, the strain gauge also deforms. If the object is stretched, the foil pattern elongates, becoming thinner and longer. This change in dimensions increases the electrical resistance of the foil. Conversely, if the object is compressed, the foil pattern shortens and thickens, decreasing its electrical resistance. This relationship between strain and resistance change is calibrated, allowing the measured resistance to be directly correlated to the amount of strain.

Strain gauges are commonly bonded to the surface of a material using a special adhesive, ensuring good mechanical coupling. They are typically used in a Wheatstone bridge configuration, which amplifies the small resistance changes and makes the system more sensitive to strain while also compensating for temperature variations. Applications for strain gauges are widespread, including in load cells for weighing scales, pressure sensors, structural health monitoring of bridges and aircraft, and in experimental stress analysis for engineering design. Their ability to provide precise, localized strain measurements makes them indispensable tools in many scientific and industrial fields.
