Varotentrett

Varotentrett is a term of Norwegian origin, literally translating to "rotation right" or "clockwise rotation." It is most commonly used in the context of nautical navigation, particularly in relation to sailing. When a sailing vessel performs a varotentrett, it means the boom of the sail is swung from one side of the boat to the other, resulting in the sails filling from the opposite side. This maneuver is essential for changing the direction of the boat, especially when sailing upwind or tacking.

In sailing, a varotentrett is performed by steering the boat's bow through the wind. As the boat crosses the wind's path, the sails momentarily luff, or flap, before catching the wind on the new side. The boom, attached to the bottom of the sail, pivots around the mast to facilitate this change.
