Vanbrugh

Vanbrugh is a residential estate located in Harold Hill, Romford, London. It was one of the last large-scale Taylor Woodrow estate to be completed, with the first residents moving in in 1965. The estate was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1966.

Designed in the style of a British new town, Vanbrugh features a range of modernist-style low-rise blocks, high-rise blocks, and sheltered housing for the elderly. The estate's design is characterized by its use of concrete and brick, with some buildings featuring decorative cladding and balconies. The estate's layout is a mix of closed and open areas, with some blocks surrounded by green spaces and pedestrian walkways.

The estate has undergone significant regeneration efforts in recent years, with many new homes being built and existing ones being renovated. In 2007, a £12.5 million regeneration program was launched to improve the estate's infrastructure, including the construction of new roads and pedestrian areas. As of 2020, many of the estate's high-rise buildings have been demolished and replaced with new housing, including apartments and houses.

Vanbrugh Estate Residents Association has been active in promoting the interests of residents since the 1970s and has worked to improve the quality of life on the estate through various initiatives. Despite its challenges, Vanbrugh remains a lively and diverse community, with a range of cultures and age groups represented. The estate is easily accessible by public transport, with multiple bus routes running through its streets.

Today, Vanbrugh is an integral part of the Romford community, with many local businesses and services catering to its residents. While the estate faces ongoing challenges, its residents and local authorities continue to work towards creating a thriving and vibrant community.
