Valuuttajäsenyys, often translated as "currency membership" or "monetary union membership," refers to the situation where a group of countries decides to adopt a common currency and establish a shared monetary policy. This is a significant step beyond simple exchange rate coordination, as it involves the creation of a single currency that circulates throughout the member states. The most prominent example of this is the Eurozone, where eleven European Union member states adopted the euro as their common currency.

The primary motivations for establishing a currency membership typically include fostering economic integration, reducing transaction costs associated with currency exchange, and promoting price stability through a unified monetary policy. By eliminating exchange rate volatility between member countries, trade and investment can become more predictable and efficient, potentially leading to economic growth. Furthermore, a larger, unified currency can enhance the international standing of the bloc.

However, currency membership also presents challenges. Member states relinquish their ability to set independent monetary policy and control their own exchange rates, which can be a crucial tool for managing domestic economic conditions, such as inflation or unemployment. This loss of monetary sovereignty can be particularly problematic during economic downturns, as countries cannot devalue their currency to boost exports or independently adjust interest rates to stimulate their economies. The success of a currency union often depends on the economic convergence of its members and the presence of mechanisms to address asymmetric shocks, where one member experiences an economic shock that others do not.
