Valonhimmentäminen, also known as dimming, is the practice of reducing the intensity of light emitted by a light source. This can be achieved through various methods, including electrical control, mechanical obstruction, or chemical alteration of the light source itself.

Electrically, dimming is commonly accomplished by controlling the voltage or current supplied to the light bulb. For incandescent bulbs, reducing the voltage lowers the filament's temperature, thus reducing light output. In LED lighting, dimming often involves pulse-width modulation (PWM), where the light is rapidly switched on and off at varying duty cycles to simulate different brightness levels. Other methods include analog dimming, which adjusts the current linearly.

Mechanical dimming involves physically blocking or diffusing the light. This can include using shutters, blinds, or diffusers that scatter or absorb a portion of the light. This method is less common for general lighting but is used in specialized applications like stage lighting.
