Valgusvarustuses

Valgusvarustuses refers to a condition where the knees bow inwards, causing the legs to form an 'X' shape when standing. This is often characterized by the ankles and feet remaining relatively close together while the knees touch or come very close. The term itself is derived from Latin, with "valgus" meaning bent outwards or knock-kneed, and "varus" meaning bent inwards. Therefore, valgusvarustuses describes a specific type of knock-kneed alignment.

This condition can be present from birth or develop over time. In children, it is common for valgus alignment to be a normal developmental phase. As children grow, their legs typically straighten naturally. However, if the alignment persists or becomes severe, it can be indicative of underlying issues. Potential causes include genetic predisposition, rickets (a deficiency in vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate), obesity, certain bone conditions, or injuries.

Symptoms can vary. In mild cases, there may be no noticeable discomfort. However, more pronounced valgusvarustuses can lead to pain in the knees, hips, or ankles, gait abnormalities, and increased wear and tear on the joints, potentially leading to osteoarthritis later in life. It can also affect shoe wear and cause discomfort when walking or running. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and sometimes X-rays to assess the degree of angulation and rule out other skeletal problems. Treatment depends on the severity and the underlying cause, ranging from observation and physical therapy to orthotics, bracing, or surgery in more severe or persistent cases.
