Value Stream Mapping originated from Lean manufacturing principles, particularly the Toyota Production System. It aims to eliminate waste, reduce lead times, and increase efficiency. A typical VSM process involves walking the actual process path, documenting each step with relevant data such as cycle time, setup time, processing time, and inventory levels. This data is then used to create a visual representation, often a diagram, that highlights the flow and identifies areas needing attention.

Once the current state is mapped, the next step is to design a future state map. This map outlines the ideal or improved flow, incorporating changes to eliminate identified waste and improve efficiency. The transition from the current state to the future state often involves implementing Lean tools like Just-In-Time (JIT), Kanban, Poka-Yoke, and 5S. VSM is a powerful tool for gaining a holistic understanding of a process and driving continuous improvement. It can be applied to manufacturing, healthcare, software development, and many other industries.
