The process typically begins with collection and sorting, where waste streams are grouped by material type or contamination level. Advanced sorting technologies such as optical scanners, density separators, and magnetic classifiers are employed to increase purity and reduce manual labor.

The second phase involves cleaning or depollution. Particulates, organic matter, and residual contaminants are removed through washing, agitation, or chemical treatment. The effectiveness of cleaning directly influences the quality of the final product; thus, rigorous quality control metrics are established. During clean‑up, hazardous constituents may be neutralized or isolated, complying with environmental regulations and occupational safety standards.

Following cleaning, the material moves to the conversion stage. Depending on the end‑use, this could involve shredding, pommelising, extruding, or chemical depolymerisation. For instance, polymers can be chopped into flakes and then melted into pellets, while metal alloys may be smelted to extract base metals. Chemical recycling may break polymers into monomers, which are then re‑polymerised into virgin‑quality plastics. This step is supported by energy recovery techniques such as gasification, which converts non‑recyclable fractions into syngas or heat.

The final phase is reformulation or productisation. Recycled feedstocks are blended with virgin materials to meet specification requirements, and the resulting intermediate is processed into finished goods—such as new containers, building materials, or automotive components. Quality assurance protocols, including mechanical testing, chemical composition analysis, and compliance with sustainability certifications, close the loop. These stages constitute a closed‑loop reprocessing system that promotes resource efficiency, reduces landfill volumes, and decreases raw material consumption in line with circular economy principles.
