Utrangering

Utrangering is a sociological term used in Swedish discourse to describe the process by which individuals or groups are marginalized and excluded from social networks, workplaces, or civic life. It encompasses both informal dynamics, such as persistent ignoring, social shunning, or rumor, and formal actions, such as rules or decisions that restrict participation, access to resources, or status within a group. The phenomenon often involves power imbalances and can intersect with other forms of discrimination, including age, gender, ethnicity, or disability.

Contexts and mechanisms include workplaces, schools, online communities, and community organizations. Exclusion can occur through subtle cues—being left out of communications, sidelining from activities, or diminished acknowledgment of contributions—as well as through explicit measures, such as removal from teams, denial of opportunities, or policy changes that restrict involvement. The processes may be intentional or unintentional and can be reinforced by organizational norms or cultural expectations.

Consequences for those affected include reduced social support, lower self-esteem, increased stress, and diminished participation in work or community life. Researchers may assess utrangering through measures of perceived belonging, social network analysis, frequency of interactions, and long-term outcomes such as engagement and retention.

Mitigation focuses on inclusive leadership, transparent decision-making, clear anti-exclusion policies, and proactive reintegration efforts. Critics note that addressing utrangering often requires attention to underlying power structures and broader social inequalities.
