Utlufting

Utlufting is the process of removing trapped air from a closed system or vessel, typically to improve performance, safety, and reliability. In plumbing, heating, and hydronic systems, purging air from pipes and radiators ensures full fluid flow, reduces noise and vibration, and prevents air locks that can impair circulation or heat transfer.

Common methods include automatic air release valves installed at high points, manual vents used during initial filling, and systematic purging sequences that flush sections with water or inert gas to push air out of the system. In industrial and laboratory settings, degassing equipment or vacuum degassers may remove dissolved gases from liquids, while gas purging with nitrogen or other inert atmospheres displaces air to avoid oxidation or ignition hazards.

Applications range from building services (hot-water and steam systems, chilled-water loops) to process industries (chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage), water treatment, and scientific instrumentation. Proper utlufting can prevent water hammer, corrosion, noise, and reduced heat transfer, and is often part of commissioning and routine maintenance.

Safety and standards: Venting procedures are governed by codes, manufacturer instructions, and industry best practices. Unauthorized or improper venting can create pressure surges, leaks, or release of hazardous gases. Equipment such as air-release valves, purge lines, and inert-gas systems are used to control and document the venting process.
