The platform would allow users to list items with detailed provenance information, including origin, maintenance history, and prior ownership. Sellers would undergo verification, and transactions could be protected by escrow services and buyer-seller rating systems. A price-history feature would track previous listings to inform current pricing. An API would enable third-party apps to access provenance data and listings, promoting interoperability with other reuse initiatives.

Technologically, UsedThat is described as using a tamper-evident log to record provenance events, such as item receipt, inspection, repairs, and transfers of ownership. Privacy controls are expected to restrict sensitive data while preserving an auditable history. The project envisions a governance model that combines community moderation with NGO and retailer partnerships to establish standards for verification and disclosure.

History and status: The concept emerged in mid-2020s discussions about reducing electronic and textile waste. A prototype was demonstrated in 2024, with pilot programs exploring partnerships with refurbishers and thrift networks. Adoption remained limited in the absence of explicit regulation or broad industry support.
