Ungetrieben

Ungetrieben is a German term used in mechanical engineering and automotive contexts to describe a component that is not driven by a power source. The word is typically applied to an axle, wheel, bogie, or shaft that does not receive torque from the engine or main drive train.

In vehicle drivetrains, some axles can be driven (angetrieben) while others are ungetrieben. For example, in a typical two-axle car, the driven axle delivers power to the wheels, while a non-driven axle rotates without receiving engine torque. In trucks or trailers, certain axles or wheels may be ungetrieben to reduce drivetrain load or to simplify design. In four-wheel or all-wheel drive systems, configuration and mode selection determine which axles are powered and which remain ungetrieben.

In railway and railcar contexts, driving axles transmit traction from the locomotive or traction motors, whereas other axles on a vehicle or car body may be ungetrieben and rotate freely.

An ungetrieben component is connected to the surrounding structure or suspension but not to the transmission or differential that transmits engine torque. This distinction helps describe how power is distributed and can influence traction, efficiency, and weight distribution.
