Underhelmet

Underhelmet refers to any garment worn beneath a protective helmet. The primary purpose of an underhelmet is to enhance comfort, hygiene, and sometimes, to provide additional thermal regulation or impact absorption.

Common types of underhelmets include skullcaps, balaclavas, and headbands. Skullcaps are typically made of thin, breathable fabric, often moisture-wicking, to absorb sweat and prevent it from irritating the skin or dripping into the eyes. Balaclavas, which cover the head, neck, and sometimes the face, are often used in colder conditions for thermal insulation. Headbands can be worn to manage hair or absorb sweat.

The materials used for underhelmets vary but often include synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon for their durability and moisture-wicking properties, or natural fibers such as cotton or merino wool for comfort and breathability. Some specialized underhelmets may incorporate gel padding or impact-absorbing materials to provide an extra layer of protection, though this is less common.

Underhelmets are used in a wide range of activities where helmets are required, including motorcycling, cycling, construction work, skiing, snowboarding, and various sports. They help to extend the wearability of helmets, especially during prolonged use or in challenging environmental conditions. Proper cleaning of underhelmets is important for maintaining hygiene and preventing odor buildup.
