Ulvales

Ulvales is an order of green algae (Chlorophyta) within the class Ulvophyceae. The group comprises various genera of mostly marine macroalgae, with Ulva (sea lettuce) being the best known. In many modern classifications, genera such as Enteromorpha have been merged into Ulva, reflecting changes based on molecular data.

Morphology and life cycle characteristics are diverse but many Ulvales form simple, sheet-like thalli or branched filaments rather than complex, differentiated structures. They inhabit shallow coastal waters and are commonly found on rocks, shells, or other submerged substrates in intertidal and subtidal zones worldwide. Some species can form dense blooms in nutrient-rich conditions, contributing to green tides.

Reproduction typically involves both asexual and sexual strategies. Asexual reproduction occurs by fragmentation or vegetative propagules, while sexual reproduction proceeds via gametes produced in specialized structures. The life cycle of Ulvales generally features alternation of generations, with haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes; in many species these two generations are isomorphic, possessing similar morphologies, though variation occurs across the group.

Ecology and human use are notable aspects of Ulvales. As primary producers, Ulvales contribute to coastal food webs and habitat structure, supporting a variety of microfauna. Some Ulva species are harvested as food in various cultures and are studied for potential applications in biofuels, animal feed, and bioremediation. Conversely, nutrient-driven blooms can create ecological and logistical challenges for coastal ecosystems and aquaculture facilities.
