This diagnostic method employs a transducer, a small handheld device, which emits high-frequency sound waves into the body. These waves travel through tissues and organs, and when they encounter different densities, they bounce back as echoes. The transducer then receives these returning echoes, and a computer processes them to generate real-time images displayed on a monitor.

Ultrasound is widely used in various medical specialties. In obstetrics, it is crucial for monitoring fetal development, assessing pregnancy complications, and guiding procedures like amniocentesis. In cardiology, echocardiography uses ultrasound to visualize the heart's chambers, valves, and blood flow, helping to diagnose conditions like heart disease and murmurs.
