Folkeskolen refers to the public primary and lower secondary education that provides the basic schooling for children and young people. Gymnasiale uddannelser are general upper secondary programs designed to prepare students for higher education; common subtypes include STX (studentereksamen), HHX (højere handelseksamen), HTX (højere teknisk eksamen), and HF (højere forberedende eksamen). Erhvervsuddannelser (EUD) are vocational education and training programs that combine school-based instruction with practical work, typically organized into et grundforløb (foundation year) and et hovedforløb (main program), often culminating in a svendebrev or other professional qualification.

Voksen- og efteruddannelse covers education for adults, including AMU (arbejdsmarkedsuddannelser) continuing vocational training and VUC (voksenuddannelsescentre) for flexible adult learning. These pathways support re-skilling and lifelong learning. Videregående uddannelser refer to higher education, such as bachelor and kandidat programs, as well as other professional education offered by universities and university colleges; they fall under the broader category of videreuddannelse.
