Udaipur

Udaipur is a city in the state of Rajasthan, India. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Udaipur district and is the historic capital of the Mewar Kingdom. Located in southern Rajasthan near the Aravalli range, the city sits around Lake Pichola and is known for its lake landscapes and hilltop palaces.

Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II after the fall of Chittorgarh, Udaipur developed as the capital of the Mewar dynasty and remained an important regional center through the medieval period. It became part of the Indian state of Rajasthan after independence. The old city preserves a network of palaces, temples, and havelis that reflect Rajput architectural traditions.

Key landmarks include the City Palace complex, a vast fortress complex along the lakefront that houses museums and courtyards. The Jagdish Temple, built in the 17th century, is a major temple dedicated to Vishnu. The Lake Palace, now a luxury hotel, floats on Lake Pichola. Other notable sites are Saheliyon ki Bari, Bagore Ki Haveli, and the Monsoon Palace (Sajjan Garh) on a hill above the city. The nearby Fateh Sagar Lake is another important water body and recreational area.

Udaipur’s economy is driven by tourism and crafts, including miniature paintings, marble work, and textiles. The city hosts cultural events such as the Mewar Festival and features craft villages and museums like Shilpgram, a rural arts complex, that preserve traditional arts.

Transportation is served by Maharana Pratap Airport (Dabok) and Udaipur City railway station, with connections to major Indian cities. The city is a popular base for exploring the surrounding Aravalli hills and heritage sites.
