UV-curables are formulations designed to rapidly form solid materials when exposed to ultraviolet light, enabling solvent-free coatings, inks, adhesives, and resins that cure in seconds to minutes.

Most UV-curable systems rely on acrylate or methacrylate monomers and oligomers combined with photoinitiators that generate reactive species upon UV exposure. Two main curing mechanisms are used: free-radical polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates, and cationic polymerization of epoxy- or vinyl ether–based systems. Photoinitiators absorb light in the ultraviolet range (commonly roughly 360–405 nanometers for many commercial systems) and produce radicals or cations that start the polymerization. Oxygen inhibition can slow surface cure, and light attenuation limits cure depth, sometimes requiring higher initiator loading, pigment considerations, or multi-pass curing for thicker films.

Applications span coatings (protective, decorative, and functional), digital inks and screen-printing inks, adhesives, and encapsulants in electronics. In additive manufacturing, UV-curable resins are used in stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), and other light-based 3D printing techniques, enabling high-detail parts with relatively rapid fabrication.

Advantages of UV-curable systems include rapid cure, low or no VOCs, and potentially lower heat input compared with thermal curing. Limitations involve depth of cure, shrinkage and residual monomer content, post-curing requirements for full properties, and sensitivity to light exposure and processing conditions. Proper handling, ventilation, and waste management are important due to the chemical nature of the monomers and photoinitiators.
