Túlkur

Túlkur is the Icelandic word for an interpreter, a person who renders spoken or signed language from one language to another in real time. Túlkun is the act of interpretation, and a túlkur is a professional who facilitates communication between speakers of different languages. Interpreters may work in a wide range of settings, including courts, hospitals, schools, conferences, media events, businesses, and public institutions. They may specialize in fields such as law, medicine, or technology and may work with spoken languages or sign languages.

There are several modes of interpreting. In simultaneous interpreting, the túlkur translates while the speaker talks, typically using equipment such as headphones and a microphone. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter speaks after the speaker has finished a segment. Other modalities include whispered interpreting and remote interpreting, which use technology to connect participants who are not in the same place.

To become a túlkur, individuals usually need high proficiency in at least two languages, strong listening and memory skills, cultural competence, and the ability to convey meaning accurately and neutrally. Training often involves university programs in translation and interpretation, professional courses, and supervised practice. Ethical standards emphasize confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy, and respect for clients and speakers.

In Iceland, as elsewhere, interpreters help ensure access to information and services for people who speak different languages. The profession is supported by professional guidelines, continuing education, and, where appropriate, accreditation or certification to maintain quality and accountability.
