Többtudományos (literally "multidisciplinary" in Hungarian) refers to an approach in research and education that integrates knowledge, methods, and perspectives from multiple academic disciplines to address complex problems. This methodology contrasts with traditional single-discipline studies by emphasizing collaboration across fields such as natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, and medicine. The goal is to create more comprehensive solutions by leveraging diverse expertise, particularly in areas where problems are inherently interdisciplinary, such as climate change, public health, or technological innovation.

The concept gained prominence in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as globalization and technological advancements increased the complexity of societal challenges. Institutions in Hungary and beyond have adopted többtudományos frameworks to foster interdisciplinary research centers, joint degree programs, and collaborative projects. For example, universities often establish cross-faculty initiatives to bridge gaps between disciplines, encouraging researchers to engage with fields outside their primary expertise.

Critics of this approach argue that it may dilute the depth of specialized knowledge or lead to superficial integration of ideas. Supporters, however, highlight its potential to generate innovative solutions by combining theoretical and practical insights from varied backgrounds. In Hungary, the term is frequently used in academic and policy discussions to describe research funding priorities, curriculum design, and institutional reforms aimed at enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration.

Többtudományos research is particularly relevant in fields like environmental science, where ecological, economic, and social factors must be considered simultaneously. Similarly, advancements in artificial intelligence benefit from input across computer science, ethics, psychology, and law.
