Typ2Anschluss

Typ2Anschluss, or Typ-2-Anschluss, is the European standard for AC charging connectors for electric vehicles. It covers the Type 2 charging plug and the corresponding vehicle inlet used in public charging stations and home wallboxes. The standard is defined in IEC 62196-2 and has been adopted across the EU as the dominant AC charging interface (Mode 2 and Mode 3).

The Type 2 connector is a seven-pin design that supports single-phase and three-phase AC power. The plug on the charging cable fits an inlet on the vehicle or wallbox and carries three line contacts (L1–L3), a neutral (N), and protective earth (PE), plus signaling lines for proximity (PP) and control (CP). Voltages up to 400 V are supported; currents commonly range up to 32 A, with higher-power configurations up to 63 A in some installations. Consequently, typical AC charging powers range from about 3.7 kW (single-phase) to around 22 kW (three-phase).

In practice, the Typ-2 interface is the prevalent European solution for AC charging and is found on most public charging stations and home wallboxes. For DC fast charging, the CCS (Combined Charging System) uses the same Typ-2 physical form with additional DC contacts, enabling higher-power charging without changing the AC connector standard.

The Typ-2 design is also known as the Mennekes plug, after a major supplier. It is the standard for most European manufacturers and is widely compatible with European charging equipment, though adapters exist for non-European systems.
