Tvangsspising

Tvangsspising, also known as compulsive overeating or binge eating disorder in a clinical context, refers to a behavioral pattern characterized by recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food in a discrete period of time, accompanied by a feeling of loss of control. These episodes are often followed by feelings of guilt, shame, and distress. Individuals experiencing tvangsspising may eat much more rapidly than normal, eat until uncomfortably full, eat large amounts when not feeling physically hungry, and eat alone due to embarrassment about how much they are eating.

The exact causes of tvangsspising are not fully understood but are believed to be multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are frequently associated with the disorder. It is distinct from bulimia nervosa in that it is not accompanied by recurrent compensatory behaviors such as purging, excessive exercise, or fasting.

Tvangsspising can have significant negative impacts on an individual's physical and mental health. Physically, it can contribute to weight gain, obesity, and related health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Psychologically, it can lead to social isolation, impaired functioning, and worsening mental health conditions. Treatment often involves a combination of psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and sometimes medication, with the goal of addressing underlying psychological issues and developing healthier coping mechanisms.
