Tuneliai

Tuneliai are man-made subterranean passages through soil or rock that allow the transport of people, vehicles, or utilities. In Lithuanian, tuneliai is the plural of tunelis, and the term covers a broad range of underground corridors built for transportation, drainage, energy, communication, and storage purposes.

Common types include road tunnels, railway tunnels, pedestrian tunnels, mining tunnels, and utility tunnels that house cables, pipelines, or drainage systems. Some tunnels are designed to accommodate traffic flows, while others serve as maintenance passages or service routes within buildings, ports, or industrial sites.

Construction methods vary with depth and geology. Shallow tunnels are often built using cut-and-cover techniques, while deeper routes are created by bored tunneling with tunnel boring machines or by mining methods. Structural lining is usually concrete, sometimes with steel segments; cross-sections are commonly semicircular or horseshoe-shaped for strength and drainage.

Design and safety considerations are central to tuneliai. Ventilation, lighting, drainage, fire safety systems, surveillance, and emergency exits are integral. Clear signage and communication systems enable safe evacuation and operation. Maintenance focuses on lining integrity, water control, and monitoring for ground movement or water ingress.

Historically, tunnels have been built since antiquity for irrigation and passage, with modern engineering accelerating during the railway and highway eras and continuing in contemporary infrastructure projects. Notable examples include long road and rail tunnels around the world, as well as major transnational projects such as the Channel Tunnel and the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
