Tu22s

The Tu-22 is a supersonic strategic bomber developed in the Soviet Union by the Tupolev Design Bureau. Its initial designation was Project 105, and it was given the NATO reporting name "Blinder." Development began in the late 1950s, and the aircraft first flew in 1959. The Tu-22 was intended to replace the aging Tu-16 Badger bomber and was designed for high-speed penetration of enemy airspace.

Several variants of the Tu-22 were produced, including the Tu-22A carrier-based bomber, the Tu-22R reconnaissance version, and the Tu-22K anti-ship missile carrier. The aircraft was powered by two large Tumansky R-15 turbojet engines mounted above the rear fuselage. Its distinctive variable-sweep wings allowed for efficient flight at both subsonic and supersonic speeds.

The Tu-22 saw limited operational service, primarily with the Soviet Air Force and the Iraqi Air Force. It was deployed during the Soviet-Afghan War and the Iran-Iraq War. While capable of high speeds, the Tu-22 suffered from a number of drawbacks, including poor low-speed handling characteristics, a cramped cockpit, and a relatively short range. Its operational effectiveness was further limited by the lack of advanced electronic countermeasures and a rudimentary weapons system. The Tu-22 was gradually retired from service throughout the 1980s and 1990s, being replaced by more advanced aircraft like the Tu-160 Blackjack.
