Standard equipment includes a metal detector, pinpointer, digging tools, protective gear, finds containers, GPS and mapping software, and, in underwater contexts, diving equipment.

Legal frameworks vary: permits, trespass restrictions, anti-poaching or treasure trove laws, and obligations to report discoveries. Ethical practice emphasizes preservation, legal compliance, minimal disturbance, proper documentation, and returning significant artifacts to public museums or authorities when required. Public-interest organizations and clubs promote education, responsible detecting, and heritage preservation.
