Publicinterest

Public interest is a concept describing the welfare or well-being of the general public and the common good of society. It is used to guide laws, policies, and decision-making when private interests may conflict with, or fail to protect, the broader public.

In law and public policy, the public-interest standard justifies government action and regulatory interventions aimed at protecting health, safety, environment, competition, or access to essential services. Decisions are often evaluated against criteria such as effectiveness, proportionality, transparency, and accountability, with the intention of advancing collective welfare rather than narrow private gain. The term is commonly written as public interest, though some contexts use public-interest or a single compound form such as publicinterest.

In professional and corporate contexts, duties and obligations may be framed as being in the public interest, particularly where actions could affect consumers, employees, or the community at large.
