Design choices must comply with local building codes and regulations that govern dimensions such as width, headroom, handrails, and allowable riser and going measurements, as well as requirements for landings and fire safety. Structural feasibility and load-bearing capacity are also important, as is the impact on adjacent rooms, doors, and ceilings.

Common staircase configurations are straight stairs, L-shaped stairs with a landing, U-shaped stairs with a second landing, spiral stairs, and winders or curved stairs.
