Transitionminimized is a concept used in computer science and systems engineering to describe a design or analysis goal in which the number of state transitions in a process is reduced without altering its observable behavior. It emphasizes lowering transition counts as a means to improve efficiency, reduce power consumption, or simplify implementation, while maintaining functional equivalence.

In formal models such as finite state machines, transitionminimized configurations seek to reduce transitions by merging equivalent states and removing redundant edges, provided the input-output relation or the language recognized remains unchanged. The aim is to achieve the same external behavior with fewer transitions, which can simplify analysis and execution.

The concept shares connections with automata minimization and circuit optimization. While traditional automata minimization concentrates on reducing the number of states, transitionminimized approaches can be more granular, focusing on minimizing transitions directly under constraints such as latency, timing, or resource usage. Techniques may include partition refinement, state merging, and event aggregation, as well as path compression and avoidance of unnecessary state oscillations.

Methods and tools used to pursue transitionminimization include model checking, solver-based optimization, and heuristic search, often accompanied by cost functions that penalize the number of transitions. Applications span software design, compiler backends, user interface workflows, protocol design, and embedded systems where fewer transitions can reduce energy use, latency, or complexity.
