These infections are most frequently caused by viruses, with the common cold and influenza being primary culprits. Bacterial infections, particularly Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat), are also a significant cause and often require antibiotic treatment. Less common causes include fungal infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of torokfertőzések can vary depending on the underlying cause but often include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, redness in the throat, and swollen tonsils. Other symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, and a runny nose or cough, especially in viral infections. Bacterial infections may present with a more sudden onset of severe throat pain, often without typical cold symptoms.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and may include a rapid strep test or throat culture to identify bacterial infections. Treatment for viral torokfertőzések is primarily supportive, focusing on rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses and are only prescribed for confirmed bacterial infections. For bacterial infections, a full course of antibiotics is crucial to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals, are important preventive measures.
