Top-freezer refrigerators are a design category in which the freezer compartment is located above the refrigerator compartment. The primary storage area for fresh food is below, typically accessed by a top or bottom door on the main cabinet. This layout contrasts with bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French-door configurations.

The design became prevalent as households adopted electric refrigeration in the mid-20th century, valued for manufacturing simplicity and lower upfront cost. While modern kitchens increasingly feature different layouts, top-freezer models remain common, especially in entry-level and mid-range segments, due to their affordability, reliability, and straightforward controls.

Typical features include adjustable shelves, crisper drawers, gallon-door storage, and interior lighting. Freezers can be frost-free or require manual defrost, though many contemporary models use automatic defrost. Energy efficiency has improved over the years with advances in insulation, compressors, and electronics. Sizes vary, but common dimensions are around 60 cm wide and 160–180 cm tall, with total capacities roughly 10–22 cubic feet depending on the model.

Usage and market context: In North America, top-freezer units have historically dominated the market in the standard refrigerator category, particularly at lower price points. They are often chosen for lower purchase price, easier repairability, and simple operation. While some consumers prefer the ergonomic reach of bottom-freezer or the higher-end aesthetics of French-door designs, top-freezer models remain a durable, widely available option in many regions.
