TolinGaurhoth
Tolin Gaurhoth, often referred to as the "Great Fortress" or "Citadel of the Great Wolf," is a fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. While not explicitly detailed in *The Lord of the Rings* itself, it is referenced in supplementary materials such as *The Silmarillion* and *The History of Middle-earth* series. Tolin Gaurhoth is described as a vast and formidable fortress situated in the north of Beleriand during the First Age. It was originally built by Caranthir, one of the Sons of Fëanor, as a stronghold to defend his territories. However, its most significant historical association is with Sauron, the Dark Lord, who seized control of the fortress after defeating Caranthir. Under Sauron's dominion, Tolin Gaurhoth became a place of terror, a base for his operations, and a prison for those captured by his forces, particularly elves and men. It was known for its immense size, its menacing appearance, and the oppressive atmosphere that pervaded its dark halls. The fortress played a role in the Wars of Beleriand, serving as a strategic point for Morgoth's forces. Later, during the Dagor Bragollach, the "Battle of Sudden Flame," Tolin Gaurhoth was a key defensive position. Ultimately, the fortress was destroyed by the intervention of Lúthien Tinúviel and Huan the Hound, who confronted Sauron there and ultimately reclaimed it, leading to its downfall and the liberation of its prisoners. The exact location and physical description of Tolin Gaurhoth remain somewhat ambiguous in the texts, contributing to its aura of mystery and dread.
