Toimintonäppäimet, commonly known as function keys, are special keys on a computer keyboard labeled F1 through F12. They are typically located at the top of the keyboard, above the alphanumeric keys. These keys do not produce a character when pressed; instead, they are used in conjunction with modifier keys like Ctrl, Alt, or Shift, or by themselves, to perform specific commands or actions within a software application or the operating system.

The functionality of each function key can vary significantly depending on the context of the program being used. For example, F1 often opens a help menu in many applications. F2 is frequently used to rename files or folders. F5 is commonly associated with refreshing a web page or a file view. Other keys, like F11, might toggle full-screen mode. While some functions are standardized across many programs, developers can also assign custom functions to these keys.

In some laptop and compact keyboards, the function keys might require pressing an "Fn" key simultaneously to access their intended function, with the default action of these keys being media controls or screen adjustments. This allows for a more compact keyboard design while still providing access to a full range of functionalities. The development and standardization of function keys have been an integral part of human-computer interaction, streamlining common tasks and offering shortcuts for efficient computer use.
