Toimintonäppäimet, often abbreviated as F-keys, are a row of keys found at the top of most computer keyboards. These keys are labeled F1 through F12 and their functionality is context-dependent, meaning they perform different actions depending on the active application or operating system. Typically, the function of each F-key is displayed visually within the software interface, though some common uses are widely recognized.

For instance, F1 is commonly used to open a help menu in many programs. F2 often initiates renaming a file or folder. F3 can be used to search within an application. F4, when combined with the Alt key (Alt+F4), is a standard shortcut for closing the current window or application. F5 is frequently employed to refresh a web page or reload a document. Other F-keys have varying roles, such as F11 for toggling full-screen mode in browsers or F12 for accessing developer tools.

The specific functions assigned to the F-keys can also be customized by users in some software or through operating system settings. This allows for tailored shortcuts to streamline workflows. On some laptops, the F-keys may have dual purposes, with a secondary function accessed by holding down the 'Fn' key. This allows for control of hardware features like screen brightness or volume.
