TlNO3

TlNO3 is the chemical formula for thallium(I) nitrate, an inorganic salt containing thallium in the +1 oxidation state and the nitrate ion. It forms a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water. As a nitrate, it is typically produced and used as a source of Tl+ ions in inorganic synthesis and in the preparation of other thallium compounds.

Preparation methods commonly involve the reaction of thallium(I) oxide with nitric acid: Tl2O + 2 HNO3 → 2 TlNO3 + H2O, followed by crystallization. Alternatively, dissolving elemental thallium in nitric acid under controlled conditions and subsequent crystallization can yield TlNO3. It is a manufactured reagent rather than a naturally occurring material.

Physical and chemical properties include its stability as a solid at ambient conditions and its solubility in water. Upon heating, TlNO3 thermally decomposes to produce nitrogen oxides and thallium-containing oxides, in line with the behavior of many nitrate salts. In solution, it behaves as a typical Tl(I) salt, though the thallium cation is highly reactive with oxidizing or reducing environments.

Applications of TlNO3 are largely confined to laboratory synthesis and the preparation of other thallium compounds. Its use is restricted by safety and regulatory concerns due to the high toxicity of thallium salts. Exposure can cause severe poisoning, with effects affecting the nervous system and hair loss among other symptoms; therefore, handling requires appropriate facilities, personal protective equipment, and disposal as hazardous waste.
