Tislausyksiköistä (distillation units) are fundamental pieces of equipment used in chemical engineering and industrial processes for separating components of a liquid mixture based on differences in their boiling points. The core principle relies on vaporization and subsequent condensation. A typical distillation unit consists of a reboiler, a distillation column, a condenser, and a reboiler. The liquid mixture is heated in the reboiler, causing the more volatile components to vaporize. This vapor rises through the distillation column, which is often packed with materials or contains trays to increase the surface area for contact between the vapor and liquid phases. As the vapor ascends, it cools, and components with higher boiling points condense and return down the column. Conversely, components with lower boiling points continue to rise. At the top of the column, the vapor passes through a condenser, where it is cooled further and converted back into a liquid. This liquid, enriched in the more volatile components, is then collected as the distillate. The less volatile components remain in the reboiler or are removed as bottoms. The efficiency of a distillation unit is determined by factors such as the height and design of the column, the temperature and pressure gradients, and the reflux ratio, which is the proportion of condensed vapor returned to the column. Distillation units are employed in numerous industries, including petroleum refining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage production for purification and separation purposes.
