Tiilisellä

Tiilisellä is a small rural locality situated within the municipality of Jyväskylä in Finland’s Central Finland region. The settlement lies on the western edge of the Päijänne National Park, approximately 7 kilometres north of the city centre of Jyväskylä. It covers an area of 1.2 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 180 residents as of 2023, predominantly engaged in local forestry and agriculture.

The name 'Tiilisellä' derives from the Finnish word tiili, meaning 'brick', reflecting the area’s historical association with a 19th‑century brickworks that operated on the site until the late 1930s. The brickworks supplied building materials to the growing towns of Jyväskylä and Kuopio and left behind a number of brick structures that now form the core of the village’s historic architecture.

Economically, the locality has transitioned from the brick industry to a mixture of small‑scale farming, forest management, and tourism. Many of the surrounding forests are managed by the state-owned Metsähallitus, and the nearby lake Päijänne attracts fishing and boating enthusiasts. Annual events such as the Tiili Heritage Festival celebrate the area’s industrial past and promote local crafts.

Transport links include a regional bus service that connects Tiilisellä to Jyväskylä centre and a cycling trail that passes through the surrounding countryside, making it accessible to both residents and visitors.
