Tighthead

Tighthead refers to the tighthead prop, a forward position in rugby union. The term designates the player who packs on the right-hand side of the front row in a scrum and typically wears jersey number 3. The front row also includes the loosehead prop (number 1) and the hooker (number 2).

In the scrum, the tighthead binds on the right of the hooker and engages between the opposing loosehead prop and the hooker. The role is to stabilize the scrum, absorb pressure from the opposing front row, and generate power to drive the scrum against the opposition. Tightheads must maintain a strong body position, resist collapse, and assist in winning or securing the ball at the scrum when it is put in by the scrum-half.

Beyond the scrum, tighthead props contribute in open play through rucking, mauling, tackling, and carrying the ball in short-yardage sequences. They are typically among the heaviest and strongest players on a team, with emphasis on neck, shoulder, and core strength, leg drive, balance, and technique. Endurance and discipline in binding and positioning are important to minimize penalties from referees.

Training and selection for the tighthead emphasize scrummaging technique, core stability, neck and shoulder strength, and overall fitness, along with the ability to perform as an effective ball carrier and defender in tight contact situations.

In rugby union, the term tighthead is central to the front row dynamics. In other codes such as rugby league, the term is less commonly used, as scrum structure and terminology differ.
