Threatening

Threatening refers to the act of expressing or implying the intent to cause harm, property damage, or other adverse outcomes to another person or their interests. It can be verbal, written, or nonverbal and may serve to intimidate, coerce, or deter.

In law, threats are often treated as offenses when they convey an intention to inflict harm and create fear in the target. Effects can include fear, anxiety, increased stress, avoidance, and harm to reputation or safety. Threatening behavior is often addressed in workplaces, schools, and social platforms, with policies or laws aimed at preventing harm and promoting safety.

Response and prevention: if threatened, seek safety and report to authorities or a supervisor; document incidents; avoid escalation; legal remedies may include restraining orders. In many places, training and policies on de-escalation and conflict resolution are used to reduce risk.
