Tervenduspuud

Tervenduspuud, known botanically as Populus tremula, is a deciduous tree species native to Europe and Asia. It is also commonly referred to as the European aspen or quaking aspen. This tree is characterized by its smooth, pale bark, which often has dark, diamond-shaped markings. The leaves of the tervenduspuud are typically rounded with finely toothed edges. Their most distinctive feature is their tendency to tremble or "quake" in the slightest breeze, a phenomenon attributed to their flattened leaf petioles.

Tervenduspuud is a fast-growing species and can reach heights of up to 25 meters. It is a pioneer species, often colonizing open or disturbed areas, and plays an important role in forest regeneration. The tree reproduces both sexually through seeds and asexually through root suckers, which can form extensive clonal stands. These clonal colonies can be genetically identical and are sometimes referred to as "genets."

The wood of the tervenduspuud is soft and light, making it useful for various purposes, including pulpwood for paper production, matches, and cheap furniture. Historically, its wood has also been used for construction and fuel. The tree is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions but prefers moist environments. It is relatively hardy and can withstand cold climates. The distinctive trembling of its leaves has inspired folklore and given rise to its common names in many languages.
