Telematiikka, or telematics in English, is an interdisciplinary field that combines telecommunications, informatics, and data analytics to collect, transmit, and analyze data from remote or mobile assets. It integrates hardware sensors, wireless communications, positioning technologies, and back-end software to support monitoring, control, and decision-making.

Key components include sensors and onboard devices, communication networks (cellular, satellite, or hybrid), location data, and cloud-based or edge computing platforms for data processing and visualization.

Applications are wide-ranging: fleet management and vehicle tracking, remote diagnostics and maintenance, driver behavior monitoring, usage-based insurance, and smart mobility services. In industrial, maritime, and aviation contexts, telematics enables asset tracking, condition monitoring, and performance optimization.

History and evolution: early telemetric systems emerged for automatic vehicle location in the mid-20th century, with GPS-enabled telematics expanding in the 1990s and 2000s. The rise of IoT and cloud computing has accelerated adoption and integration with data analytics and AI.

Challenges and considerations include data privacy and security, data ownership, interoperability between devices and standards, and regulatory compliance with vehicle and personal data laws. Ethical use and transparent data practices are increasingly emphasized.
