The evolution of telecommunication began with the telegraph in the 19th century, followed by the telephone and radio broadcasting. The 20th century saw the introduction of high‑frequency radio, satellite communications, and the shift from analog to digital networks. In recent decades, the focus has moved towards broadband internet, mobile telecommunications standards such as 4G LTE and 5G NR, and the integration of the Internet of Things. These advances have allowed unprecedented access to information, making telecommunications essential for commerce, governance, and personal communication.

Regulation of the sector varies by country but typically involves oversight of spectrum allocation, licensing of service providers, and enforcement of consumer protection standards. In Lithuania, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications and the state-owned operatorė Telekomas oversee national infrastructure and regulatory compliance.

Telecommunications play a pivotal economic role by enabling digital economies, supporting telemedicine, and enhancing educational opportunities. They also raise societal challenges including digital divides, cybersecurity risks, and environmental impacts from energy consumption.
