Tekstsetting

Tekstsetting, also known as type setting or typesetting, is the process and art of arranging type for printing or display. It involves selecting fonts, determining font sizes, line spacing, letter spacing, and overall layout to create readable and aesthetically pleasing text. Historically, tekstsetting was a manual labor-intensive process performed by typesetters who physically arranged individual metal letters (type) in a composing stick, which was then locked into a forme for printing. This method, known as hot metal typesetting, was dominant for centuries.

The advent of phototypesetting in the mid-20th century introduced photographic methods for creating type images on film or paper, which were then used to expose photographic plates for printing. This significantly increased speed and flexibility compared to hot metal. The digital revolution brought about desktop publishing and digital typesetting, where text and images are composed and manipulated electronically using computers and specialized software. This is the predominant method today, allowing for a wide range of typographic control and instant visual feedback.

Effective tekstsetting goes beyond simply placing words on a page. It considers the readability and visual appeal of the text, influencing how readers perceive and engage with the content. Factors like hierarchy, contrast, and the use of white space are crucial elements that skilled tekstsetters manipulate to guide the reader's eye and enhance comprehension.
